THIRTY-ONE
AS THE FOOTSTEPS grew louder, I holstered my weapon and raised my hands. They weren’t after Chris. They were here for me. I stepped forward and squinted as I looked out into the large room, waiting to see the agent that Landry sent to intercept me. I lowered my hands as soon as I saw the man come into view.
“Blake? Are we clear?” asked Agent Mark Reynolds as he lowered his weapon and cautiously walked toward me. I nodded and met him at the door and shook his hand. “What the hell happened here, man?”
“Hostage situation,” I replied. “You alone?”
“Just me. Landry’s bringing some of us back in from Union Station. He asked me to come up here instead, said Reed was caught up in some trouble with you, Blake. Guess he doesn’t know you and I are tight, too.”
I turned around to look at Chris, but noticed that Lisa had taken a seat on the couch. Her face was white. I walked closer and knelt down and held her hand. It was cold and sweaty. “Are you in pain, Lisa?” I asked.
She shook her head and looked down to her thigh. Her black jeans were damp with blood. I could see where a bullet had grazed her and broke the skin. I reached into my pocket and grabbed the knife that I had taken from the man on the floor in the corner, still unconscious. I opened the blade and carefully cut open part of the jeans. “You’re lucky,” I said. “Another half inch to the right, we’d have a bigger problem.”
“Guess I’m just shaken up,” she replied and turned to her right. I could see why she was feeling ill.
“Let’s move to the other room,” I suggested as I noticed that Lisa kept glancing at the body of the man that held her at gunpoint. The scene out there wasn’t much better, but the color quickly returned to her face.
I motioned for Lisa to take a seat against the wall just outside the room that we exited. She sat down on the floor and AJ joined her. I knelt again to get down to their level and help them feel more comfortable.
“So how do you know my name? Are you FBI?” asked Lisa.
“Something like that,” I said. “Morgan disappeared a few hours ago, we tracked him down to this building. It looks like he was trying to find both of you. We think he got kidnapped. We followed the trail here.”
Lisa nodded, satisfied with that answer. “Morgan’s his uncle,” she said, looking at AJ. “He came for us.”
“Lisa Evans, DoD,” I said and turned to my right. “You’re Anthony Lennox, but you prefer AJ. Also DoD.”
AJ shook his head. “I was. Last day there was Friday, I was supposed to start at the NSA on Monday.”
Chris had stepped out and walked up behind me. I looked up to see if he had heard what AJ just said. “What do you mean you were supposed to?” I asked, turning back to AJ to understand what he meant.
